Network Cabling

Mid-sized industrial company – 60 employees – 2 sites – fibre-optic backbone

Network Cabling

About the customer

The customer is a mid-sized industrial company with 60 employees, comprising two production sites in the same town, around 1 km apart. The customer works primarily with CAD applications.

Starting situation

In 2022 the company approached PROXYTEC with a request to analyse its IT infrastructure. The customer complained in particular about slow network connections. Copying data sometimes took a considerable time – as the work involves design data, a single CAD file can be several gigabytes in size.

PROXYTEC’s solution and services

1. Network infrastructure

The network cabling had been poorly planned and poorly implemented by the previous service providers. We first checked every existing LAN connection with a professional cable tester (Fluke LinkIQ). Some cables were incorrectly terminated at the network sockets – delivering only 100 Mbit/s instead of gigabit.

Many access points were offline, running old firmware or supplemented with Wi-Fi repeaters. The customer was advised to rely primarily on LAN cabling rather than Wi-Fi, since data throughput is considerably higher.

Fibre-optic backbone

A distribution cabinet was installed in every industrial section. The sections are linked to each other by fibre-optic cabling with 10-gigabit connections.

CAT7 to the workstations

From the distribution cabinets, CAT7 network cables run to the individual workstations – each connection at 1 Gbit/s.

Wi-Fi optimisation

A Wi-Fi survey was carried out in every hall section. Wi-Fi repeaters were removed and missing access points added.

Zentrales Management

All network devices are centrally manageable, monitored 24/7 and receive central firmware updates.

2. Internet connection between the sites

Staff at site A access the file server at site B via VPN and vice versa – with file volumes of up to 2 GB. Analysis of the internet line at site A showed only 50 Mbit/s down and 20 Mbit/s up. Once the situation had been explained, the customer decided to upgrade to a synchronous fibre-optic line.

Conclusion

Today the customer has a stable, high-performing and documented network infrastructure. Our managed services monitor all components around the clock and keep them permanently up to date.
